The College-Industry Council on Material Handling Education (CICMHE) held the 2011 Material Handling Teachers Institute (MHTI) at Auburn University, July 31-August 5. The event included training by thought leaders in material handling education, networking, and tours of local facilities. Demo3D is pleased to have been chosen by the Material Handling Industry of America to participate in this event, and provided Demo3D training and then tested the attendees with a material handling model contest, as shown in the video. The mission of the College Industry Council on Material Handling Education (CICMHE) is to undertake educationally-oriented activities designed to increase awareness and greater understanding of material handling. CICMHE provides quality materials and teaching aids for use in any educational/training setting. The Council encourages research and sponsors educational seminars and training courses. Through its various programs and diverse representation of membership, CICMHE facilitates the interchange of information among concerned individuals in industry, academia and in the user community to aid in improving and implementing material handling education. Automated cell polishing plumbing handles using a FANUC M-10iA short arm invert mount Robot with an R-30iA compact controller, courtesy of Acme Manufacturing Company An Operator loads parts onto an index table, which then rotates 180 degrees to present unfinished parts to the waiting M-10iA robot. The Robot picks up a part and moves it through a laser to confirm it is properly positioned in the gripper. Once the part position is confirmed, the robot takes the part to an abrasive belt head and grinds and polishes the edge surfaces. The End of arm tooling rotates the part to finish all sides consistently. The Robot then places the part onto a turn around stand to reposition and grind the other side. Two different grades of sand paper are used to ensure the parts are finished to the proper specification. Customer achieve production rates of up to 240 part per hour.
A FANUC R-2000iB/165F robot picks a running board from a fixture table and presents it to a series of sanding and buffing wheels to achieve a smooth mirror finish. During the process, the robot uses a gripper stand to re-orient the running board to ensure all areas are finished properly and consistently. This process utilizes multiple polishing and buffing wheels on each electric motor to maximize floor space, and minimize equipment and energy use. The robots six axis flexibility and long reach makes it ideal for processes requiring multiple stations and a large work envelope. The harsh environment created by the debris and high speed sanding and buffing motors makes it unsuitable for manual labor.
